5/1/98 Fishin

1John 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

I asked the Lord for a scripture. He gave me 1 John 2:17. It talks of doing the will. Am I doing the will of the Lord? Are you doing the will of the Lord? What causes a Christian to lose sight of God and enter into an affair? Certainly that is not the will of God.

This morning as Tina and I prayed I realized that the attack is steepening. Little things. People in the church being attacked with ailment and infirmity. This morning my phone was ringing moments after 6am. Attack on finances both personal and for the church. As much as I would like to ask "why?", the appropriate (more appropriate)question is what do we do?

We preach a gospel of prayer and praise...that's what we do! We begin to praise the Lord in ALL things. So I praise Him for trusting each one of us enough to carry His light and walk uprightly before Him, doing His will.

Habbakuk 3:17 Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls:

18 Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation.

19 The LORD God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds' feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places. To the chief singer on my stringed instruments.

Now many would say that is not a statement of faith. BUT, keep reading...I will rejoice in the Lord.

Yes, I can focus on the circumstances. I can give up. But haven't I been there. James 1:9 Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door.

10 Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience.

11 Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.

God is merciful.Look to Job's end, not all the in between. And look at verse 9. "Grudge not". Do you have a grudge(to sigh, to groan)? RESOLVE it!!! Let's not walk after the flesh (Romans 8:1), but pursue the Spirit of God.

Church, we talk of the last days and the end times and can't even get through this time and this day. Ever listen to squabbling children? No greater sound for a parent, right? What does the Lord think? Do you not see that all the junk that is coming to the surface is part of His plan for a spotless bride, for bringing us to perfection?

So many have become so much like the chameleons. That species of lizard that becomes part of its surrounding, becoming a "leaf" when in front of a leaf, becoming a "twig" or a "stick" when it walks upon a branch.

When we are with the unsaved we become like the unsaved and when we are with the saved its "Amen" and "halleujah" til the cows come home.

There was the story about the two Christians who went night fishing in a boat on the lake. The mature brother looked into the water and began to smile, as the light beamed from his face the fish began to leap into the boat(OK.Stretch a little!) and the other brother was amazed. "Wow! Amazing! How do you do that?" "You look in the water and be who you are." (Simple, right?) He looked into the water and as the elder brother was busy on his end, he heard a splash. He turned to see the other with his head in the water, lips puckered and moving in and out like the fish, while his eyes bugged out and he had begun to look like a fish. It was only through the quick actions of the elder brother who grabbed him, that prevented him from falling out of the boat and joining the fish.

Pretty bad, huh? But I hope it illustrates a point.

See, the goal is to be the light to attract others to your Lord. The circumstances may not be comfortable or timely, but we still must walk through the victory Jesus has given us.

Too many resemble the fish, and not the fisher. Too often I see a group of Christians who look much like the world. I am talking not about dress or appearance, but about actions. A dear friend has entered into an affair. What do I tell them? They know. And yet they tell others that they are of Christ? They look like the world!!! They resemble the fish! Oh, they might still go to church, but that is religious and not godly and I believe they know that. What brings someone to that place? Hurt, loneliness, anger perhaps. And what is our place? Grace, mercy, kindness.

Begin to walk in what you know. Begin to act like Jesus, not becuase you have to, but because of love. When trials come, God is there. Oh, it may be quieter than you would like, but try something different-praise Him.

Begin to be like the fisherman who was an attraction to the fish, and not fall into the snares and the traps of the world. And record your victory. Watch your "boat" fill with fish. Watch the amazement on coworkers and friends.

Be a fisherman.

Selah.

Shalom.
